Finally, the big day is here and it’s time to move into your new home. You’ve double-checked and triple-checked that everything is packed and ready to go; now it’s time to move. Here’s a helpful list of moving day items that you should have nearby to help you keep a cool head on your big day.
NEW HOUSE KEYS
This seems like an obvious one, but it can be imagined that there are many horror stories of people and families arriving at their new homes and forgetting their keys. Put them in a safe place where you won’t forget them. Sometimes it’s the smallest and most obvious things that we can forget when we’re moving.
PACKING KIT FOR STRAY ITEMS
This can consist of a few extra cardboard boxes, some scissors, tape, bubble lining, wrapping paper and a permanent marker. One of the last things you want to see is a stray collection of plates or a misplaced toaster, and not have the materials to get them packed properly into your new home.
BAG OF TOILETRIES
It’s good to pack a bag of toiletries to tide you and your family over for a few days. Having items we normally take for granted like soap, toothbrushes, shampoo and deodorant are great to have on call and ready to go when you’re living out of your moving boxes.
If you have a pet, having your pet food, food and water bowls, and some treats will make your furry friend happy. After all, it’s a big day for your pets too.
If you have prescriptions be sure that they’re filled and you know where they are. Again, sometimes it’s the little important things that we can forget.
ID CARDS & BANK CARDS
The last thing you want to do is scramble around looking for your wallet, driver’s license and credit cards. Having cash and credit cards ready on your move-in day will come in handy. Especially when dealing with movers and possibly having to grab some meals outside of the home.
Be sure to pack some extra batteries, a portable alarm clock and a flashlight (just in case). These will come in handy when your belongings are stashed in moving boxes. Other items you should definitely have ready to grab are your cell phone, chargers, laptop, and an e-reader, if you use one frequently.
Moving shouldn’t be all work and no play. Pack some snacks and a portable radio or a wireless speaker for a much-deserved break. Everyone loves a snack break and unpacking to the sound of music is a great way to lighten the mood.
